Not celebrating one nil victories

Presumed. written after Shrewsbury played Bradford on 9th April, 2012. I know true football fans are supposed to celebrate seeing one nil victories that affirm their club in the top three with five games to go, with proclamations like battled, stuck together and worked hard, and just stick at it. But Monday's game - Shrewsbury vs Bradford - saw the ball bounce off all players like they were kicking at a rugby ball. There were no flowing moves and the goal came from a six foot fifteen full back who was the only one to try step-avers despite having the gait of a horror movie mummy. Neither side were defensive as such but it was noticeable that it was both clubs' senior centre-halves that dominated the game. What I find odd is opposing managers saying what a good footballing side Shrewsbury are, despite the string of one-nils. What's truly odd is how certain clubs have dominated the fourth tier this season. A bit like the Premiership, where it's even odder. Man U set to win again, despite some significant injuries and re-using a 37-year-old Paul Scholes. Meanwhile, in Europe, the years of 3 English clubs in the last 4 is well and truly over. This, and an English national side which never seems to get balanced and remains uncomfortable receiving the ball, must be making the football establishment wonder. Or perhaps not. Cos the hype continues to distort priorities and reality, and provide profits.
