Budget time and it’s a pretty raw deal for Nottingham.
Unlike residents of East Dorset who actually get an increase in their gov’t funding this year, Nottingham has a £20 million shortfall and the choices are pretty unpleasant.
The consultation exercise has begun. The Meadows will want to discuss new plans for the Portland Leisure Centre.
Meanwhile the tram works are starting and the first question is how many of the trees along Queens Walk (almost all 130 year-old Lime) have to be lost. Answer is 42 cos they’re in the way of tram track beds, infrastructure or utilities; or because the new inclines up to Robin Hood Way will bury their trunks. One tree has to be lost because it is diseased. A further 42 are being evaluated with City Council officers calling for hard pruning in preference to the loss of the actual, tree. Another 60 have to be protected during construction works.
Some demolition of council housing in The Meadows is also planned.
I’m chasing unauthorised car parking at the shopping centre and tipping there and on Wilford Crescent East as well. Canvassing with Lilian Greenwood MP found support for a residents’ parking scheme for Conduit Close and nearby streets, as well as a litter problem on Healey Close.
A clean up of alleyways off Glapton Road and Woolmer Road involving residents has been welcomed.
I’ve chaired my first meeting of the board of the Meadows Advice Group and represented them at the Advice Nottingham board, where we’re all getting ready to work with new systems for the new contract awarded to CAB and other neighbourhood groups.
A tour of Riverside school gave me the chance to ask Year 3 if they’d ever used the tram (overwhelmingly yes) and whether they liked it (yes, again).
