Upon being selected to stand as Labour candidate in Bridge ward

Statement published on my blog, on 18th September, 2011 I am honoured to be selected as the Labour party candidate to be the second Councillor for Bridge ward on Nottingham City Council.

The by-election on 20th October follows the death of Councillor Ian MacLennan.

Dee Whitworth, Meadows resident and a member of a number of community groups said -

“I know Mike will want to work closely with local groups on issues such as employment, training and services for young people, continuing the relationships that Ian MacLennan knew was an important part of representing the interests of the Meadows”.

Bridge ward Councillor Nicola Heaton said –

“Michael had been helping Ian and I extensively over the last year and raised a number of local issues with the Council.”

Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood said –

“Michael will be an excellent representative for Bridge - alongside Councillor Nicola Heaton who is already doing a great job for the ward.”

Michael says

“All my adult working life has been in Bridge ward. First joining British Rail in the city centre, then 17 years in their offices in the Meadows. Then 5 years as the City Council’s Deputy Leader.

“I have campaigned here so many times for the Labour party, in particular organising here for Alan Simpson in 1987.

Alan Simpson, city centre resident and former MP, says –

“Bridge Ward has found a jewel in Mike Edwards.

“Mike 'wrote the script' for the Council's environment policies. He championed their transport policies and led the way on renewable energy and fuel poverty issues.

“I loved working with him when I was your local MP, and look forward to doing so again as a campaigner in the area. He will be a great councillor for us.”

My pledges –

meeting, listening to and helping residents;

working with residents groups, and adding value the work;

campaigning for a fairer and greener society.

I have a wealth of experience in local government to bring. Eighteen years as a city Councillor. Serving at Nottingham City Homes and on the boards of EnvironEnergy and the tram development company.

Whilst Deputy Leader and in charge of the council’s finances, we expanded public services and provided better value for money.

Experienced and capable - I will make a difference for the Meadows and the city centre
