New buildings, new expectations and new ways of working

On the way to canvassing in Bulwell this morning, saw the buildings of the new Bulwell Academy.

I trust it's an inspirational place to learn.

I met a teacher who wanted to explore whether the expenditure on BSF was worth it, having conceded that the schools built in the 50s or 60s say didn't inspire.

Indeed we all know that there's much more to a school than its buildings (leadership, management, teaching and learning to name the four key others).

Canvassing in the Top Valley area wa s pertinent for such a debate as Nottingham City Council is waiting to hear the outcome of its legal challenge to the Gov't over Michael Gove's chaotic cancellation of 2 Nottingham secondary schools to be radically renewed under Building Schools for the Future; one of them being the Top Valley school.

Top Valley and Bulwell are both in the Nottingham North constituency, which until recenlty sent the smallest proportion of its Year 13s to university for any Parliamenatry Constituency in the country.

Labour's commitment to social justice included new buildings, new expectations and new ways of working, most especially for the children who needed most help.
