Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for Local Government, has said local councils should share the blame for the budget deficit with the bankers.
The progress in that statement is that he does in part blame the banks. (Gordon Brown didn't even get a mention.)
As for deficits, having spent 5 years in charge of a city council's budget, I do at least know that the budgets have to be balanced, I also had to declare our financial intentions for the forthcoming year in advance. So we treat money a bit differently.
Meanwhile, concern is developing about the response to the latest phase of the H1N1 flu outbreak, suggesting that GPs are not equipped to organise a proper response to such outbreaks (Radio 4). And GPs are going to be put in charge through the NHS re-organisation!
