It can't be nice to be stung. To appear to be receiving people who want your help only to find out they were posing. And everyone needs space for private thoughts.
But sharing your private thoughts with two strangers when you are a Secretary of State of a government
- slashing benefits when it can't have happened without you allowing it, and
- opining about the future of Mudocrch when you have to demonstrate fair consideration in a process of which you are a key part
is extraordinary.
People have put it down to poor discipline, but in a way, it's typical of Lib Dem behaviour on the ground. They always want to agree with someone even if it means contradicting yourself.
A Guardian editorial has today made the obvious jibe - a re-working of the insult Cable once threw at Gordon Brown. Beginning as Sain Vince, having become Mr. Bean.
Ed Miliband got it right in calling for him to go. But he probably hasn't used his excuse cards up yet.
Problem 1: u-turn on tuition fees; Excuse card 1; blame the predecessors;
Problem 2: caught talking against Gov't policy; Exciuse card 2: blame unforeseen circumstances;
Problem 3 - perhaps not here yet.
But as everyone who knows the gag knows, Excuse card 3 is "write out 3 excuse cards for your successor".
