Litlle doubt that Alan Johnson had the better of George Osborne on Monday on the Autumn Growth Statement. "Let us move from bombast to reality" At times, George was struggling to find the words for a riposte. http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201011/cmhansrd/cm101129/debtext/101129-0001.htm#1011298000002

The situation in Ireland tells a striking story. Politicians follow an economic policy on reducing public services in the name of reducing the annual government deficit, applauded by the International Monetary Fund. A year on, they’ve only succeeded in hurting people and now Ireland needs a loan from Europe. The UK gov’t is to help that loan, having chosen not to give a loan to a major engineering firm in Sheffield to create jobs for the future.
We can see Britain going the same way in Ireland with its cuts programme. The projected loss of 480,000 public sector jobs as a result of the ConDems’ spending plans is projected to be matched by a similar loss of jobs in the private sector. Nottingham’s share of that total job loss is perhaps 5,000. You kinda want to stop the country now, and shake it, and say turn around, before it’s too late. Have we really got to wait 5 years?
