In making my choice for Leader, I was looking for the candidate to have a mission. David has stated his clear and simple – “I will build a movement to overthrow this damaging government and put power in the hands of the many, not the few” – grounding his campaign in the values expressed in clause 4.
Andy too has spoken of mission and values, and made strong points on how to have proper policy debates in the party. Ed B has campaigned well against the Con Dems and for the radical action we took and we need to keep people in work.
But as a candidate in the last General Election, I know that I was also looking for a Leader to demonstrate command and authority on the television and in the debates, and I believe that David demonstrates that command and authority consistently and at times superbly (such as the early Newsnight debate between the leadership candidates and in a subsequent interview on the Daily Politics).
And whilst I have toyed with notions of sending signals with my vote for Leader, I know what will most assure me that the party is seeking to win and win in a new way is if David wins, and that’s why I will be giving him my first preference.
