Splendid Splendour

The Pet Shop Boys came to Nottingham to the Splendour Festival hosted by the City Council and the news is that they only ever had 5 hits, 2 of which were “Go West”!

Ok. Ok. I’ll stop. Such bias, such tribalism.

And if I felt like this, why did I go?

Well, record crowds went this time (13,000) and with the range of bands on, there’s bound to be something you like, even if it’s only Shed Seven’s “Getting Better”. And you could see how artists work the crowd. Essentially by shouting “Hello Nottingham”. Always got a cheer. Never failed.

Calvin Harris went further by explicitly asking people if they wanted to jump – which they did, to the rhythm of Spike Milligan’s dustbin dance. (Now, if we can get his music piped into every school for 20 minutes, we'll soon have childhood obesity cracked.)

Some of the side acts featured Nottinghamshire bands and there is perhaps a sense that the local music scene might be taking off.

The Splendour festival is becoming another reason to be proud of the city.
