Alan Plater, playwright and screenwriter has died.
Many reasons to celebrate his achievements, but "A Very British Coup" was a tremendous film for a time when the nearest we thought we might ever see to a modern portrayal of a Labour victory and a Labour Prime Minister was Harry Perkins, steelworker from Sheffield. And I believe Chris Mullin the author acknowledged that Alan Plater gave the film a much more interesting than the book. Great stuff, although it is amazing at how dramatically the film has aged.
Also sad to hear that "Frank Sidebottom" has died.
His act captured the imagination at a time that football fans were looking for something that captured their love of the game and being a supporter, and was becoming prominent in fanzines and alternative football magazines.
His cover version of Bros songs does not seem to be the most readily acknowledged comedy achievements but he made something of the pain we were suffering from the latest boy band fad. "I owe you 20p, which is nothing at all" still sticks in my mind.
