A long-planned scheme kicked in today at Nottingham University Hospitals to procure food to feed 7,000 people a day, directly from local farms rather than through suppliers who've been reaching out across the world. A BBC tv report showed farmers from Shardlow and Hatton who said they have been saved by the new scheme. And the scheme saves £6 million a year and lots of greenhouse gases.

Other good news from Nottingham hospitals today was coleague Katrina giving birth to Sofie at 2.a.m. "Everyone fine and happy." A bit of a relief since as late as 10 days ago she'd been canvassing for me in Stenson Fields.

Meanwhile congratulations to Toby Perkins, the new MP for Chesterfield on his appearance on BBCtv Newsnight last night. Sat next to 2 Oxbridge graduates from the Lib Dems and Conservatives, he punctured the pompous atmosphere that had been generated in the studio, with some simple facts about the range of people that represented the people in Parliament, compared to the other parties.
