Michael Edwards is the portfolio holder for tackling climate change; he's addressed national local government events on the progress made in Nottingham. Emma Dewinton led the scrutiny investigation that produced over 50 recommendations that were accepted as policy by the City Council. Mo Munir has driven the extra reporting of graffiti and street repairs by Mapperley's Labour Councillors.
Recycling over 45%
In Mapperley ward residents are recycling over 45% waste - and a further 930 households are joining the 3 bin scheme this month making a total of 6099.
Smarter Streets
Cleaner streets - less dirty streets in Mapperley ward; extra bins installed; survey shows 86% of people in our area satisfied with clean streets.
Tree pruning, especially in Mapperley Park; the demand is still huge but tree pruning other than for emergencies was stopped during the years of the Tory Gov't;
Lots of repairs to pavements and lights, graffiti removed and tipping cleared; many done as a result of reports by local Labour Councillors;
More pavements refurbished, security fencing and gating upgraded
Our parks and Nottingham in Bloom
Floral displays extended to Woodborough Road, Kingsthorpe estate, The Wells Road and in Mapperley Park;
Coppice Grove Recreation Ground, new fencing and gating to prevent joyriding, new paths through woodland, bulb planting - and a programme of continued improvement for the year ahead with sports development work and consultation on sports facilities etc.;
The Wellls Road Children’s Playground, off Mickleborough Avenue has also seen the community involved in clearance of undergrowth to enable fun days and community use, and a bid for funding for further work;

NOTTINGHAM CLEANS UP
Over the last 4 years Labour investment has halved the number of dirty streets in Nottingham. Making us the cleanest of the 8 big English Cities.
That means Nottingham's officially cleaner than Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Newcastle and Bristol.
“It's great news” says Councillor Collins, “but there is still a lot more to do - some parts of the City still don't come up to scratch and getting it all up to the standard of the best over the next 4 years has to be our priority”.
Labour's clean-up campaign has been driven by:
• More that £1million investment in extra staff and machinery
• Four new graffiti removal teams
• 1000 extra litter bins
• Set up a NEAT team to tackle 'grot spots' reporting to every Area Committee
• Annual Spring Cleans
• Wardens issuing fixed penalty notices for litter louts
• Legal action to stop fly-posting and fly-tipping
You can help keep Nottingham clean by reporting dumped rubbish and graffiti on 915 2000 or through the Council website at www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk and click on the 'Report a Problem' button the left hand side of the page.
Nottingham Labour's promise to you - over the next 4 years we will:
• become the cleanest big city in the country
• make sure local shopping centres are as clean as the city centre
• double cleaning frequencies in high density terraced housing areas
• set up a NEAT Team reporting to every Area Committee
• halve the amount of graffiti and fly-tipping
£1m BOOST FOR RECYCLING
A £1million boost to recycling in Nottingham is set to drive rates above most of Britain's other big cities. Latest figures show around 21% of Nottingham's waste is recycled with rates hitting nearly 50% in some areas. The extra money will see the 3 Bin scheme rolled out to 30,000
more homes giving people even more chance to get involved.
“Nottingham Labour's committed to doubling recycling in Nottingham over the next 4 years and are prepared to find the money to do it” said Labour Council Leader Jon Collins.
Like many big cities, Nottingham faces challenges extending recycling in terraced housing areas, flats and where people don't want to take part. That's why recycling rates are higher in many small, rich District Councils.
But Nottingham Labour's keen to hear your views on how best to bring recycling to all Nottingham's neighbourhoods. If you live on a terraced street or in a flat tell us how you think we could collect recycled materials from you. You can email us your ideas on info@nottinghamlabour.org.uk or write to us at Nottingham Labour Party, Unit 5, 3 Hawksworth Street, Nottingham, NG3 2EG.
Nottingham Labour's promise to you - over the next 4 years we will:
• Ensure that every house in the City has kerbside recycling
• Set up a Nottingham Carbon Offset Trust to support activities that reduce global warming
• Transform Nottingham into a zero carbon emission City
• Fit solar panels and other energy generating and saving technology in all new Council buildings.
• Significantly reduce the Council's energy and water consumption.
LABOUR PROUD OF A BRIGHTER CITY
Here's just some of what Labour's done to green our City in the last year:
• Given away a million bulbs to schools, community groups and the public to brighten up gardens, parks and grass verges.
• Won national awards for Nottingham in Bloom for the City's floral displays
• Won green flag status for 6 of our Parks
• Won money for major refurbishments at Wollaton Park and Newstead Abbey
• Run tidy garden competitions to brighten up our neighbourhoods.
