Fairness and opportunity for pensioners in Mapperley ward
Gordon Brown this week delivered his eleventh Budget. We wanted to write to you straight away to highlight some of the key points –
changes to make work pay;
5% cash increases for the next 3 years for our children’s education;
a further 7% real growth in the NHS.
We also wanted to highlight some of the key points for pensioners in Mapperley ward.
We know pensioners here value a stable economy which is why Gordon Brown took action in his Budget to lock in our hard won economic stability now and in the future.
Gordon Brown also took action to recognise the contribution of pensioners by announcing new plans to raise the pensioner tax allowances so that 600,000 pensioners are taken out of tax altogether; and the tax allowances have been raised by more for older pensioners. By April 2011, no pensioner over 75 will pay any tax on incomes under £10,000.
This comes on top of the measures we have already taken to support pensioners including a Winter Fuel Payment of £200 for households with someone over 60 and £300 for someone over 80; free prescriptions & free eyesight tests and free TV licenses for over 75s.
From next year every pensioner in every part of the country will enjoy free national bus travel as well.
We have introduced free central heating for Pension Credit recipients & discounts of £300 on central heating systems for all other pensioners who do not currently have it.
The pension credit guarantee rises to £119 a week, then £124, increasing to £130 a week in 2009-10, increased in step with earnings as we move towards our commitment of linking the state pension to earnings.
But none of this would be possible if we took risks with our economy, or cut investment in our public services, as the Conservative Party now want us to do.
Instead Gordon Brown’s Budget makes the right choices for Britain’s, and Mapperley’s future.
Best wishes
Emma Dewinton, Michael Edwards & Mo Munir
P.S. In Nottingham, Labour kept the free bus pass and ensured it can be used on the tram too. In Gedling, Tories withdrew a bus pass for older people, without consultation. And Labour introduced “MyBus”.
