Here’s a quick summary of news, events and casework for February

27th Gov’t announce £1.658m reward to Nottingham for business growth;


23rd East Midlands Regional Assembly;

22nd Meet Douglas Alexander, Secretary of State for Transport, to discuss proving technology for the national road pricing scheme with tests across the 3 cities; discuss the petition to No. 10 "e-signed" by 1.8 million people; note BBC survey that found many of the protestors support road pricing if money goes to better public transport;

22nd formal announcement that Audit Commission’s assessment of the City Council’s services has improved in 3 of the 7 service blocks;

21st present Nottm’s progress on tackling climate change with Human Geography students at Nottingham Trent University, after a showing of Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth”;

20th Executive Board; - announce City Council tax increase of 2.89%; - capital programme of Nottingham City Council set to exceed £1,000 million in the next 6 years; - approve funding arrangements for phase 2 of Nottingham Express Transit; - agree closure of children’s home on Woodborough Road; - 70% of all PIs are performing better or as well as they were at Quarter 3 (Q3) last year; - adopt a revised ICT strategy for the City Council, primarily aimed at support the focus on meeting customer’s needs first, with an emphasis on improved services for telephones users and use of new technologies;

19th final Digital Challenge presentation to jury in London;

13th Cabinet Minister Hazel Blears visits Nottingham to launch the second Respect strategy;

13th report Council's progress on climate change to scrutiny; announce intention to adopt a 10% Merton rule by May and to consult over a larger figure as part of the consultation on the next development plan for the City of Nottingham;

12th announce a proposed Council tax increase of 2.89%, slightly lower than the planned 3%, following excellent work by the Council’s Treasury on improving our performance on financial transactions;

12th full Council; Lib Dems mobilised private hire firms and drivers to protest against the Turning Point; and yet their lack of knowledge and preparation meant they had to accept Labour’s amendment, which in turn heightened our commitment to reviewing environmental considerations as a part of any assessment of the success of the scheme;

9th Notts local authorities meet to discuss transport projects and better joint working;

9th The UK has become only the seventh nation in the world to have more than two gigawatts (GW) of operational wind power capacity;

8th Nottingham Evening Post backs City Council Chief Executive Michael Frater’s call for Nottingham to be identified as a green city;

7th Big Wheel give a presentation on Climate Change & Transport;

6th EnviroEnergy agree business plan; sales of heat for Jan. – Mar. will be below projections because of the mild winter;

5th climate change workshop at LGA conference on urban issues;

2nd the death of former Labour MP for Newark, Fiona Jones, is announced;

2nd the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says temperatures are probably going to increase by 1.8-4oC (3.2-7.2oF) by the end of the century;

2nd grant awarded to run a city bus service using ethanol fuelled buses for a trial starting in October;

2nd NCT announce that their Lilac 21 bus service is to have new full saloon buses from March as part of a £3m investment; the new buses will have: low floor wheelchair accessible entrances; CCTV fitted throughout; 2+1 seating; extra leg room for passenger comfort; passenger notice boards and information screens showing CCTV, adverts and next stop information; real time equipment fitted to offer actual bus departure times and “next bus” information; capacity for passengers increases by 20%;

1st Elliott Durham full governors;

1st attended a Consultation Meeting around the proposed Wellbeing and Social Inclusion Service (Adult Mental Health Day Services);

1st conference on Council’s strategy for student housing; extra provision of houses and flats in the city has meant property prices have not risen by the national average of 7%; even so, people in Nottingham cited affordable housing and their second greatest concern;
