29th - Expo 2005, Derby, Pride Park;
26th – attend presentation by The Army;
26th – GNP consultation on the new Local Area Agreement – a new way for public agencies to pool resources;
26th – the Tories reject a new way of electing their leader;
26th – inspection of Kingsthorpe Close and Kendale Court with housing officers, cleaning officers, neighbourhood wardens and Police Community Support Officers; also visited the drive to Kingsthorpe View;
25th – the Labour Party conference begins with tributes to Jim Callaghan, Robin Cook and Mo Mowlam;
25th – Deliver Rose newsletter to many streets affected by street vice;
24th – “The Big Day Out” – hold a stall at the fun arts and environment day, encouraging Nottinghamians to get out of their cars and choose a greener, healthier way to get around; probably11,000 people attended; people queued one and a half hours to see the “Architects of Airs’ giant inflatable Luminarium, assaulting the senses with a riot of gorgeous colours, light and sounds”;
23rd - Core Cities meet in Birmingham;
2xth - Experian’s new Town Futures Retail Report for 2005 says Nottingham has gone up the retail rankings of the major UK cities from 5th to 4th back in front of Manchester and Leeds and behind only London’s West End, Glasgow and Birmingham;
2xth - Plans for Nottingham’s new Broadmarsh shopping centre are nearer as a development deal has been signed between Westfield and the City Council. The Council has issued compulsory purchase orders - ahead of a Public Inquiry to be held next month - for 379 plots of land that will be needed for a £400 million development expanding retail space from the existing 500,000 sq ft to 1.25million sq ft creating the space for over 100 new shops and over 5000 new full and part-time jobs.
22nd – Louise Casey the Director of the Government’s Respect Taskforce, acknowledges that Respect for Nottingham has been a groundbreaking and pacesetting initiative whilst the Council’s launching the “It’s Your Call” anti-social behaviour hotline (915 20 20);
2xth - Research into internet connectivity and broadband usage in the City of Nottingham has found that 61% of households have internet connections, and 51% of connections are broadband; even our most deprived wards have a rate of broadband connection well ahead of the national average;
22nd – “Team Nottingham” meeting of City Council’s senior officers;
21st– Evening Post reports progress in “Forcing Vice of the Streets”;
20th – Mapperley and Sherwood Area Cttee.;
20th – Executive Board; discuss continued improved performance – 73% of key indicators have been sustained or improved in the first quarter of 2005-06;
20th – review of local government finance widened but postponed; a full review of local government services is announced by David Miliband, the Minster for Local Government and Communities; the remit of Sir Michael Lyons' Inquiry into local government finance is to be widened to look at the full range of services provided by councils; the inquiry will now also incorporate the revaluation of properties in England that had been expected to take place in 2007; both the recommendations of the review and revaluation have now been postponed and it is unlikely that the process will be completed in this parliament;
20th – Nottinghamshire County Council show off County Championship which they’d won on Sunday, the business representatives at a Council meeting at the Council House;
15th – Nottingham Development Enterprise – discuss development of a vision for Nottinghamas a Science City; hear that Bio-City is growing faster than expected;
14th – with Mo Munir (our Lord Mayor), welcome a delegation from Ningbo who have arrived to sign a sister city agreement with Nottingham, following the close work by our universities;
13th – tour of Pearmain Drive estate with housing officer;
13th – welcome new employees to Nottingham City Council;
10th/11th – Labour Group weekend;
9th – with Mo Munir (our Lord Mayor), meet crew from H.M.S. Nottingham at their triennial parade and march through Nottingham city centre;
6th – congratulate Elliott Durham staff on their achievements at a briefing on their Inset training day (to prepare for the new term); the school is using a new discipline policy (called CDCM), developed in Texas and used to effect at Haywood school;
5th – Full Council – answering the first petition questions from the public for the first time; adopting a Housing Strategy - which has three very clear priorities - Decent Homes, Decent Neighbourhoods and Social Inclusion;
5th – Opening of Medilink bus service; a new free bus service linking Nottingham City Hospital and the Queen’s Medical Centre, it will run every half hour between 7.30am and 6pm, using the bus stops outside the hospital main entrances as starting and finishing points;
5th – Nine, new Scania Omni Dekka buses go into service on NCTs' Go2 58 lime route to Arnold along Mapperley Park; NCT has purchased 30 buses during 2005 at a cost in excess of £3.5 million, taking the average age of the entire fleet to 4.7 years, with 82% of the buses being low floor;
2nd – Tour of Britain finishes a stage on Victoria Embankment;
1st – Stage 2 of the no-smoking at work policy for the City Council begins; full implementation scheduled for 30th November;
Despite being hit by hurricanes 3 or 4 times each year, plans to help New Orleans when it’s flooded during Hurricane Katrina are woeful; and the US Government take far too long to take serious notice.
