DEPUTY LORD MAYOR AT THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE NEW SPORTS HALL AT ELLIOTT DURHAM SCHOOL ON 10TH DECEMBER 2004
Ladies and Gentlemen:-
Today we celebrate the opening of the new sports hall.
And can I say, how proud I am as a local Councillor, to be opening this lovely building.
May I take this opportunity to welcome
John Heppell, Member of Parliament for Nottingham East,
Leaders from the local New Opportunities Fund,
Councillors and officers from the City Council,
staff from the Elliott Durham mini Education Action Zone, and
past and present, staff and students, and governors from Elliott Durham.
Can I thank members of Elliott Durham School, the City of Nottingham and the New Opportunities Fund, who have worked in partnership to develop this sports hall.
This Sports Hall offers new opportunities for families, students, schools and the community of the school.
The Hall is part of a new vision – the Mapperley Sports Village – which the school and the Council will manage together to provide a complete range of sports and leisure facilities
on what I can confidently say is the best campus in the city.
Elliott Durham is a school on the way up.
Its ethos – “Success for all” – shines through its work.
Its strength – the determination of the staff to work together as one to provide the best opportunities for the children of Mapperley and St.Anns – has seen it grow.
Its professional commitment – to quality of teaching, quality of learning and quality of organization – has been praised by inspectors.
And today, we recognise the special leadership of Valerie Penny-Stewart, in her first year as Headteacher. Congratulations to you Val, on your excellent work this year.
And the students – confident at public events – have done the city proud time and again in performances locally and at the Council House.
They have an active school council, give reports at the Governing body and their anti-bullying counselling service is an example to the country.
This new hall provides a major opportunity to build student self-esteem, raise standards in PE and to create something of which the whole community can be proud.
And only last week, it was announced that 7 schools in the City of Nottingham are to be re-built or completely refurbished.
We hope to see new school buildings to be built here for the communities of Mapperley and St.Anns in the near future. Built to reflect and support the beautiful environment of this very green part of the city. Built to support the best in 21st century teaching.
And now, a special word, for a special man - Austin Grant, the Sports Centre Manager.
Many of us knew of Austin through his excellent work for the community of St.Anns, before he joined Elliott Durham school.
Links with sporting clubs across the city and county have been built up.
Austin Grant, has been a key figure in developing these links throughout 2004, way before the Sports Hall was actually handed over in October.
Austin’s hard work has been an example to everyone. ...
Having a vision is incredibly important but leading the team making it happen for the community and the pupils is of powerful importance too.
Thank you Austin.
And congratulations again to all involved.
I hope you all enjoy these facilities.
I now declare the Mapperley Sports Centre officially open.
