DEPUTY LORD MAYOR'S SPEECH

AT TRIBUTE TO BRIAN CLOUGH Given from the balcony of The Council House by co-Councillor Mo Munir

Ladies and gentlemen,

good morning.

Welcome to you all.

It’s wonderful to see you all.

I’m sure Brian Clough’s family will be proud

to see you here today.

Our thoughts are with them.

Brian Clough was a great centre-forward;

an England international.

Brian Clough was an exceptional club manager.

A football genius.

In 18 years as Forest manager,

Brian Clough guided the club to

11 trophy wins.

An amazing record.

Brian

and Forest

stamped Nottingham’s name

on the world football map forever

with their two European Cup victories.

I remember

waiting on Gregory Boulevard

to take a picture of the European Cup,

as the club paraded through the city

in an open top bus.

We all treasure

our own special memories

this morning.

We are thankful

to have shared

so many wonderful celebrations

of Forest’s success

with Brian

right here in the Old Market Square.

Not only did Brian bring unprecedented glory to Forest,

He was also a great ambassador

for our city.

His association with Nottingham

is so strong

that he has become

as synonymous with our city,

as Robin Hood.

Ladies and gentleman,

thank you once again

for gathering here this morning

to salute the life and achievements of

Brian Clough

OBE

and Honorary Freeman of the City of Nottingham.

A hero and an inspiration

to so many people

in Nottingham and Derby,

Middlesbrough and beyond.

Brian – you have done us proud.

Thank you.
