Here’s a quick summary of news, events and casework for May 2004

28th International market on Old Market Square;

28th Voluntary sector case conference;

26th Pelican crossing commissioned on Porchester Road;

24th tour of Pearmain Drive and Warton Avenue estates;

22nd 75th anniversary of The Council House;  commerative brochure published by Nottingham Civic Society - authors include Mapperley residents Ken Brand and Martine Hamilton Knight;

20th One City Partnership agrees £750k of extra investment and services for Mapperley and Sherwood wards;

27th Elliott Durham case conference;  extra money for security agreed;  improved liason with the Police established;

20th New economic development vision for Nottingham launched by Greater Nottingham Partnership; called "Drawing Together";

19th 100 Day clean-up announced;

18th Mapperley and Sherwood Area Committee agree to a survey concerning the needs of, and potential development along, Woodborough Road;

18th Executive Board; agree to ballot on a new deal for Council Housing(up to £165m extra investment and a new way of managing services); also agree proposals (for consultation) on renewing the leisure centres;

14th Full Council; Mo Munir elected as Deputy Lord Mayor;   

13th Alexandra Court sold at auction;

13th Meet Nick Raynsford, Local Government Minister, to discuss capping;

12th One City Partnership, Nottingham, hosts annnual conference to hear Polly Toynbee (from the Guardian) and to discuss a future Community Plan; 

11thMapperley Forum;

11th LGA, London;

8th "Clean-up campaign" for streets between Mapperley Road, Mansfield Road / Huntingdon Road and Woodborough Road (plus Chestnut Grove); an opportunity to dispose of any unwanted items free of charge;

8th NET - one millionth passenger uses the new tram;

16th Shrewsbury Town are promoted back to the Football League; back where we belong; (see below)

7th - Full Council; appointment of honarary Alderman including Mapperley branch party member Betty Higgins, who was leader of Nottingham City Council for many years;

6th - The Tory Deputy Leader supports the call for cap of Council Tax increases - and then calls for more money to be spent on services for elderly people and on restoring roads and pavements.  Then he says the cap is justified cos the figures weren't presented properly - this from a Cllr. who calculated this year's 10.1% increase as 9.8%.  Go figure!

6th - Alun Michael, Minister for Local Environmental Quality, was shown the City Council’s new high-pressure washer which removes dried chewing gum from the streets;

5th - Chief Constable Steve Green reports on progress in the fight against crime to Nottinghamshire Local Authorities;

5th - Nottingham City Council is one of only four councils invited to be represented at the Prime Minister’s anti-social behaviour ’stock-take’ at 10 Downing Street this week.   The Council and its partner agencies are targeting nuisance neighbours, persistent beggars, vandals and other perpetrators of anti-social behaviour as part of the city’s Respect for Nottingham initiative, launched last October;

1st - join John Heppell MP on "roving surgery" of south end of Mapperley Park and the Cranmer Road neighbourhood;

1st Residents meet again to object to the planned antenna for Porchester Road; Cllr. Mo Munir attended; information on signals is available in The Stewart Report or from the ICNIRP;
