Mapperley Ward Forum
St. Jude’s Community Centre 11/5/04
Introduction
The meeting was introduced and chaired by Councillor Emma Dewinton who outlined the role of local forums as a chance for information on topics of local interest to be exchanged and discussed.
Youth Development Work
Christine Allanach of the City Council’s Youth Service talked of the work that she undertakes in the Mapperley ward including sessions at Brewsters estate, Ransom Road and Caunton Avenue area as well as forthcoming work at St.Jude’s Community Centre.
The methods and types of activity were described as well as the benefits in terms of empowerment and responsibility engendered to those engaged.

Neighbourhood Wardens
Karen Perkins of the City Council’s Neighbourhood Wardens team for Mapperley and Sherwood talked of the service they have been providing since setting up some six weeks previously. This included their working practice, hours, links to Police, powers and types of work encountered to date such as; litter, anti-social behavior, dog fouling and alcohol restriction as well as positive partnership work with schools, shopkeepers and residents and diversionary activities with youths.

Nottinghamshire Police
PC Nick Dale and Sgt Paul Buxton gave an overview of current work and objectives. This included the division and responsibility of the local beats as well as the work with Police Community Service Officers. The bulk of the discussion centered on vice related issues and the ways in which the problem has been tackled to date such as test cases of Anti Social Behavior Orders on prostitutes through the magistrates courts, referral and drug treatment of those abusing substances, breach of bail conditions through non-compliance and the numbers of street workers, kerb-crawlers and pimps arrested. The future work of the Prostitution Task Force from June was discussed with a multi-agency and a range of deterrents including publication of those arrested for kerb-crawling.

Elliott Durham School
Headteacher, Valerie Penny-Stewart, informed the meeting of the development of the Community Sports Hall currently being built within the grounds of Elliott Durham School. The hall is intended to develop the current curriculum via a range of facilities which will be open to the public for community use during evenings and holidays. It is hoped to be open and functional by the end of the year. A current bid, if successful, will see the entire school re-built over the next few years near the new sports hall and become a centre of excellence in sports.
The importance of consultation with the local community was underlined as was the schools liaison over security and anti-social behavior issues.

Children’s Home, 387 Woodborough Rd.
The children’s home manager, Sandra Brothwell, gave an up-date of the re-opening of the home and her appointment from Nov.2002 along with other staff. The children’s home is an interventional placement for children who have experienced a break down from family home, foster parents or referred on remand. It houses seven children from the age of 10 to 17 for up to six weeks. The problems and barriers caused by short term nature of the placements were acknowledged but emphasis placed upon re-integration, empowerment and learning new skills.

Future users of St.Jude’s Community Centre are requested not to park causing obstruction and to allow full access for emergency services.
