Circulated report to Mapperley Branch Labour Party, October 1995

Updated: Jun 27, 2021

Published 29th September, 1995 and circulated in October. Mapperley ward issues

Carrington Sports Ground

I've received a complaint about the state of the fencing.

Beechwood

A fence is to be erected around the back of the grounds.

Woodborough Road / Mapperley Road

The Accident Investigation Unit are to introduce two new pedestrian refuges either side of this difficult junction.

The bus stops will be moved slightly to accommodate them.

Mapperley Crescent

A resident of Marnham Drive was knocked down whilst crossing at the zebra recently.

Officers will advise me when more information is known.

Sainsbury's

The City Council dismissed the application for a new supermarket on six grounds.

Joan Whitehall

The Education Committee presented a plaque to Joan's family to mark the respect with which she was held.

Mr. Whitehall then addressed the committee. The occasion was moving.

The Health & Safety executive are recommending guard rails at the back of boats and that staff wear life jackets at all times; it does not find fault with the school or the Council.

Copies of the report available.

Unemployment

674; 17.0%. 15th highest district ward in the county. Cases

140 in 1995. Mapperley Hospital

John Heppell is to be shown the site by the Nottingham Healthcare Trust.

County Council issues Nottingham Healthcare Trust AGM

I attended the Healthcare Trust's AGM. The Trust runs services for people with mental health problems.

I asked three questions and was embarrassed at the quality of response.

The Trust's Chair did not know if the budget would be cut next year; but thought it important to emphasise the Government's commitment to the NHS.

There is a bed shortage and there are occasions when patients are discharged earlier than doctors would like.

The Medical Director, now resigning, used his speech to both praise the pioneering mental health work that's taken place in Nottingham; and to suggest that the finances are getting so tight that the whole concept will be lost.

Local Agenda 21

County Councillors have started proper consideration of the recommendations from the Rio Earth Conference.

Superannuation Cttee.

I've joined the committee that oversees the Council's pension fund for employees.

County Budget.

The County expects to have to cut £50 million from next year's budget.

Consultation - The County Council is to consult with the public on the extent of the cuts and the services we've chosen to cut.

Waste Notts

The Labour Group will probably decide to sell Waste Notts to raise money for capital projects, at its next Group meeting.

However, I hope negotiations are now taking place between the City and the County over the future of the Eastcroft incinerator.
