Updated: Aug 29, 2020

Published 16th September, 1995. TO BE EDITED. Mapperley ward issues

Carrington Sports Ground

Weather conditions were too fierce this summer for the groundsmen to get cricket pitches going this year.

There is concern from some local residents that the application submitted last March for a £260,000 pavilion is too ambitious and that it may have to be run as a full time social club to keep it going.

Mapperley Hall

A developer has bought the site and has provided Ba new plan. Bˇ

I believe there are risks with the new developer's plans.

Prostitution

Residents hoped to meet Jack Straw to discuss their concerns some time in the future; this does not look likely to happen.

Beechwood

10 kids on the books. It's quiet except for one lad who's has caused some damage to Elliott Durham, Beechwood itself and burnt down a neighbour's shed.

The Assistant Director is taking action.

Three managers are working together to manage the home; applications for a new principal close 15th Sept.

Ozanam House

Residents of Blyth St. say visitors to the home have been causing more problems again.

Kingsthorpe Close

Emma is working hard with the tenants and is exploring a new site for a play area.

Mapperley Hospital

The City's Director of Development says the City are seeking support from heritage agencies to convert the second half of the old hospital, but is not sure the local universities will support a new hall of residence.

Win/Wood Towers

Thanks to Dudley for attending the resident's meeting on our behalf.

Sherwood Bus Garage

NCT have announced that this garage is now for sale.

Sherwood Councillors are proposing an internal market.

Kwik Save

A new supermarket replacing the old cinema and the neighbouring car showroom is likely to win City support; there is some debate over the design.

Sainsbury's

The City Council considers a new application for Sainsbury's new supermarket on Sept. 14th.

Area Committee

The City Council's area committee has toured Mapperley and Sherwood.

The trip confirmed the impression that people outside the ward do not appreciate the levels of poverty that exist in the area. Unemployment

674; 17.0%. 15th highest district ward in the county. Cases

139 in 1995.

Notts County Council Issues County Budget.

The County expects to have to Bcut £50 million Bˇfrom next year's budget.

Waste Notts

The County may consider the sale of Waste Notts to raise capital for other projects.

This company is an arms length company created following Tory legislation in 1990.

Waste Notts controls the land-fill sites in the County, as well as the incinerator at Eastcroft.

A decision will be made on the basis of a consultant's report due this month.

Minimum wage

We'll be discussing a motion at the next full council.

National Issues Tony Blair

The controversy over the people who surround Tony Blair misses the point.

I don't believe Labour lost the last election because we had not ditched old baggage.

The spin doctors had total control of the campaign last time and the party was not causing a problem.

Safety First does wonders for local government election performances - but does it really guarantee victory at general elections when people are looking for credible government?
