Woodborough Road / Mapperley Road Junction
There have been at least 16 injury accidents at this junction since January 1991.
The accident investigation unit have devised a scheme that brings Mapperley Road and Magdala Road further into the main road to improve visibility for cars joining the main road;
and introduces a right turners lane for Mapperley Road; and hatching elsewhere which it is assumed right turners for Magdala Road will use.
There is no new refuge for pedestrians near Alexandra Court. This is proving difficult to include in any design. Instead, a proposal for a refuge further up Woodborough Road is to compete with other new schemes. Kingsthorpe
There's been some press coverage about damp in the properties; Housing Dept. advises 12 properties are affected. Elliott Durham
Governors
I attended the Spring term governors' meeting.
Kids from Manvers
Parental choice has meant most children from Manvers Pierrepont have gone to schools in Carlton; whilst more of those with special needs are coming to E.D.
It had the 3rd most deprived intake in the County and may well soon have the 2nd.
Value-added
However, the new "value-added" analytical tool shows E.D. doing as well as the average performance of all schools in Notts.
Building works
E.D. is undergoing a wide range of building works including asbestos removal; and repairing subsidence damage in the English block.
Pupil governors
Two pupils attend the meeting and made very good contributions.
LEA
The importance of a strong LEA, providing guidance and sharing experience comes over so strongly at these meetings. Education cuts
NUT one day strike and rally
I attended the march & rally held by the NUT yesterday.
2,000 people are said to have attended including branch members and teachers from Elliott Durham, Walter Halls & Haydn Road.
Details about F.A.C.E. are listed in the County Council report.
S.A.T.s
The teaching unions have moderated their opposition to S.A.T.s.
However, many in the Labour Group are totally unconvinced of their value and and believe time and effort spent on them is wasted even if the Government is prepared to finance 60% of the cost of supply teachers to cover during tests.
However, the 60% payment is subject to the LEA bidding, and the money being allocated to a school only when all the relevant classes are tested, with no allowance made for individuals teachers who are on sick, or who decide to boycott the tests.
Some Labour Councillors believe we should bid for the money. They are concerned that refusal to bid for the £210,000 plus will mean Tory M.P.s saying this Labour authority has no right to whine about the cuts.
A decision will be made by the Education Cttee. Labour Group soon.
Padstow
Allegations about not trying to save money can be met fairly and squarely by citing the Tories' disgraceful decision to grant GM status to Padstow school.
Undertakings were given that GM would not be given to any school that faced closure.
Now, the Tory Government are using tax payers money to keep open a school which was only nominated for closure because of the number of spare places in the northern part of the city and the consequent resolve from Gov't that this must mean that a school closes.
County Council Rejuvenating local democracy
In response to this Labour briefing document, the Labour Group has voted to call for Regional Government.
Rail Privatisation
The County will discuss this at its next full meeting.

Are you worried...
... by the Tories? Their leaflet is totally negative.
It lists all their concerns without one positive statement.
It pleas for people to consider the election on local terms but is a city wide leaflet.
Letter Writer
The Lib. Dems have written another letter to the Highway managers, this time about traffic calming.
You'd think they'd wait until they've got some news to report.
