Report to Mapperley Branch Labour Party, January 1995

Published 10th January, 1995.

Sherwood News

A small leaflet has been distributed in Sherwood discussing -

- Severn Trent road works;

- planning applications for supermarkets;

- a vacancy for a crossing patrol serving Haydn school.

The County Council will be opposing the Sainsbury's supermarket proposal on strategic planning & highway grounds.

Child Care Review

The review went through at December's Social Services.

It was damaged only by the cuts in finances, which meant two more homes are to close, and two to keep 18 children.

Petition

I took a petition of 500 names plus from Bill Bradbury before the meeting.

This was a smaller number than I was led to believe.

City Council

The City debated a motion on the review from the Tories last Monday.

The Tories who spoke however, merely turned the debate into complaints about the children's homes in their wards.

Bill Bradbury focused primarily on Beechwood. Using 1991 staffing (when there was 37 children) with the current number of children 14, he alleged that the proposed staff child ratio of 15 to 8 was going to be worse.

If I was charitable, I could say that the mistake was understandable; but what is clear is that Bill does not understand, has not sought to understand or to help others understand.

High Ground

I believe local Tories are desperate; and I think they will use some low tactics in the forthcoming election campaign.

Our best riposte is to take the high ground, and put in the extra effort necessary to explain the realities of life in a society fashioned by 15 years of Tory government.

Traffic Calming

The Wells Road Scheme

The St.Anns Forum, a kind of people's forum associated with City Challenge, have prevailed upon the County Council to make the Ransom Road - Wells Road junction fully signalled - though City Challenge are to found the extra money.

Education cuts

Andrew Mitchell's remarks expressing concern about the 3% cut in schools' budgets showed some cheek, given he's a member of this cynical government.

Gov't regulations dictate the maximum money to be spent.

The schools budget was cut by less than many other service, including social services.

Even with the cuts, Notts. will be spending about 6% more than the Government allows for in its SSA.

Cases

180 in 1993.

179 in 1994.

4 in 1995.

Campaigning

Confidence

With Labour's massive leads in the opinion polls, - anything between 26% & 39% - there ought to be no problem taking both Mapperley's seats.

(In theory, we need only an 8% lead.)

No assumptions will be made until canvassing demonstrates whether Mapperley's electorate is following the national trend.

Campaign starts

Campaigning started with a distribution of a leaflet just for Sherwood. …
