Labour is currently 22 points ahead in the Guardian ICM opinion polls. This matches Labour's lead in April 1990.
Education Committee.
Rising School Balances.
This is a national phenomenon. Schools are typically holding unspent balances averaging 5% of budgets for primary schools and 3.5% in secondary.
The L.E.A. is drafting new advice for schools.
Garibaldi School, Clipstone.
This school was doing very badly five years ago. It's been turned around by an entrepreneurial head teacher.
Mr. Salisbury presented a 15 minute video and a brochure (I"Managing School Marketing - Promoting a Positive Image"Iˇ) highlighting the issues that need to be addressed.
This includes a useful 13 point check list for schools to assess themselves by. It has a foreword from Sir John Harvey-Jones.
Labour Councillors have some concerns about this approach.
Swimming.
A report was passed which shows the L.E.A. envisages no drop in demand for swimming for school children in school time.
Prostitution.
The Police Committee took a report on Mapperley Road and I spoke using some notes from a branch discussion in 1991.
The media interest in this was high.
The latest police exercise arrested a far higher ratio of clients to prostitutes than usual.
Hood St., Hall St. & Mansfield St.
These streets have been included in the Detailed Works Programme 1994/95.
This means the roads should be re-surfaced in the next 12 months.
Vice-Chair.
