Report to Mapperley Branch Labour Party, April 1994

Part of the report issued to the branch meeting, held in private; published 5th April. Opinion Polls.

Labour is currently 25 points ahead in the Guardian ICM opinion polls. This is an enormous lead.

Labour was 21 points ahead in March 1990 and that's why the party is officially pessimistic about its prospects in May.

However, in 1990, Labour performed much worse than the polls suggested; winning only by 8 points.

Most years (including last year), the opinion polls and election results were in step and that's why I think Labour will do better this year than in 1990.

Richmond Drive.

I see that the Dept. of Environment have overturned the City's efforts to get oak trees chopped down by a builder replaced.

Bill Bradbury has described his Government's decision as barmy.

Thyra Grove.

A planning inspector says a public footpath from Caunton Avenue to Woodborough Road, via Thyra Grove must be provided.

Given residents of Caunton Avenue are more likely to rely on public transport than most, I think it's particularly important to support the Inspector's decision.

Woodthorpe Park.

A proper pavement is being laid between Woodthorpe Gardens and Woodthorpe Grange.

I don't know if this has been triggered by complaints from myself on behalf of Sandra Sawford.

Elliott Durham Swimming Baths.

I've received a letter saying 4 major issues have to be resolved before any of the City facilities are phased out of operation. Any closure is at least three years away. I've written a three page letter to the City.

Prostitution.

The Police have run another exercise on Mapperley Road. The local action group are pleased with the results. A report is to be taken at Thursday's Police Committee.

Cases.

48 in 1994.
