Report to Mapperley branch Labour Party, January 1994

For a private meeting; published 11th January, 1994.

Former Police Sports Ground.

The County Labour Group have resolved to support a plan to sell the bowling green for development in order to allow a lease to be purchased by high-achieving, but poorly financed football and crickets clubs from the Forest area, promoting community use.

A bid from the Nottingham High school for Girls which also proposes development of the bowling green, probably envisages a small indoor sports centre and offers no community use.

I have opposed any development of the bowling green in conjunction with the Mapperley Park Action Group.

I believe that any development of land which is both private open space and a playing field in contrary to policies of the County Council.

I took the issue to full group where I lost.

Proposed development on Woodthorpe Park.

The City Council have proposed that two sites that were previously part of the gardener's area could now be sold for development.

The idea first gained ground when capital was needed to provide new greenhouses for the City's gardeners so that the could compete in a compulsory competitive tender.

The defence of the local gardeners was seen as valuable because of their advice to local people and the annual fair - a very popular event.

The proposal has surprised residents in Sherwood Vale and Woodthorpe Gardens who thought the land was protected by covenants.

The Woodthorpe Park was purchased with money from a trust who laid down some stipulations about land not being sold for development.

I'm trying to get to the bottom of this situation. My main concern is that the gardener's land may have been expanded in the past at the expense of public space and this has created land elsewhere to sell.

Sainsbury's.

The supermarket chain have now purchased a piece of land at the City Hospital. They must be confident about getting permission to develop a supermarket there.

Mansfield Street.

A request from shops to have no parking at their goods entrances has angered local residents.

Priorities.

Besides case work and committees, my priorities for the next six months are -

- Surgeries;

- Carlton P.L.A.C.;

- supporting elections in Derby;

- organising for the Euro elections.

Unemployment.

The estimates of unemployment in the ward has now fallen to 616 (15.5%).

Cases.

Final figure for 1993 was 180. 6 already in 1994.
